Many of you are hopefully aware of the "Give Me Shelter" campaign which was initiated by Global Hand & the Festival Republic at last year's Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds Festivals, if not, please pop over to the Global Hand website and have a quick read:

http://www.globalhand.org/givemeshelter/

What we're trying to figure out now is what to do with all the tents which aren't suitable for re-use – those with broken zips, parts missing and so on.

Suggestions so far have been along the lines of flags & bunting.

Can you think of anything?

If so please add a post or topic here in the new Sustainability section of the DCSS forum.

With the current weather as it is Umberellas spring to mind, cheap and easy to assemble.Waterproof clothing,Car/Bike Covers,Waterproof covers for sleeping bags,Waterproof sacks(for putting clothing in)these can be made with the guide ropes from the tents as draw strings for the top of the sacks. Also kites would be nice with the Global hand logo and this could be put on anything that is recycled.

Possibly try organising a deal with the tent manufacturers to supply spare parts? It'd only work with the bigger ones I suppose, but it'd be very good publicity for them.

I read on Q that some of the tents were going to be recycled into trainers by Worn Again (http://www.wornagain.co.uk/)

Stitch outer tents together to make tarp. Has a billion uses.

well i think if zips are broken on tents you could remove the door completely and donate them to childrens nurseries to play in in the summer! i helped out at a nursery for a week when my mum worked there and in the summer when it is hot kids would love to be able to go in a tent to cool off! it could always be the base for hide and seek or something like that! think it over, its a great idea! I think waterproof clothing is a good idea - makes sense with the UK festival theme of downpours!

There were a large group of people in the Blue Campsite at Leeds who found a way of using tents to the full.

I believe that the correct terminology is "Waste to Energy" one of the newer Re-cycling phrases.

It was just a shame that they hadn't taken technical advice about the requirement of incinerators to have suitable air filters to clean the clouds of black smoke.

Still, they are young and will learn gradually.

Next year we could run the main stage lights and sound from the steam generators heated by the tent teletubbys from this years discarded tents.

You might think that this is a trivial joke, but I am led to beleive that this is the way that the power will be provided for the new terminal 5 at Heathrow.

Not with tents though I hasten to add.

i would also have to add that it wasn't just tents on the teletubby , a very large over filled dustbin , and quite alot of gas cans and nearly some benches from the village but we kept intercepting them, took 3 teletubby marshals and about 15 teletubby extinguishers to put the very large over sized teletubby maybe next year someone will remember the marshmallows

Yeah i was thinking the same, about replacing Zips surly that cant be that hard? When there are big rips this could be a problem but could you use one tent to patch another?

Maybe dinghies too? Some parts of glasto looked like they needed traversing in better ways :)
As for Leeds, maybe recycled into some form of restraint for the recurring pyromaniacs... the bad ones (there are good pyros 2)

How about taking the damaged tents and using them to create supersize tents that you can use like a gazebo. if it was shaped like a tent you could peg it to the ground so the wind wouldnt blow it away and make it flap in the night and then you would also have a suitably dry and cosy drinking spot
